This Guy

O man, I am trying to be so patient with him. It's almost over. However, I am a little disturbed by this fact.
The "no child left behind act" makes it mandatory that military recruiters have access to the names, phone numbers, and addresses of all students in post secondary school. It also makes it mandatory that the military has has an equal amount of access to students as potential schools ( colleges) or employers.
WTF?!?!?!
I have nothing to say about this right now. But that is some sneaky insidious shit man. We can talk about how it is classist, racist and disgusting at some other time.

Just wanted to mention.......

So, I went to the GHC meeting last night. There were lots of folks there. Wait let me back up and say that it was way more formal than I thought it would be. I don't know what I was thinking, these are doctors, at their annual company meeting. Why did I show up in my garden clogs and dragon fly shirt? O well. I was there, and was ever so obviously not dressed for the occassion, sticking out like the homebirth hippie I really am :)

But aside from my inappropriate attire, there were lots of great comments made on behalf of homebirth, and "alternative birthing options" for woman. ie, midwives, birth centers, homebirth. I was proud to be there, and make my voice heard. It seems as if GHC is listening, and is certainly a pioneer in many aspects of health care, especially for the state of WI. They have a very comprehensive "complimentary" medicine program. I hate that term. It infers that these methods of healing should be secondary to mainstream medicine. These therapies ( massage, chiro, accupuncture...) should be complimentary to a healthy diet ( that means as much organic food as possible), and exercise. They should be used first in non life threatening conditions, and in conjunction with more serious procedures if necessary.

However, all that said. I left feeling rather proud of my HMO. I certainly wasn't invited to any annual company meeting at Cigna to talk about homebirth.

As an added bonus, there was an elderly rabblerouser at my table......I wish I had his picture. Man, he was great! There was also some angry man who doesn't like CSA's. lol. who doesnt like CSA's?... ah well. I am sure there were some people at that meeting going. homebirth? who doesn't like to have their baby in the hospital? To each his own, and last night. I stuck up for my own, and it felt damn good.

Good night good people.

Eco Painting @ the Isthmus Green Day Expo

So, I still have not decided what genre of blog this is.....right now it has no genre.
It is just the random musings of a busy mama.......

So today's blog is an ode to Eco Painting.
Eco Painting is an exceptional business. It really is. I am proud of my husband, and of the company he runs. I mean, if someone else was doing it, I would be proud of them too. It's just good work.
So recently Jb was in the Isthmus "green" day expo. Green businesses in Madison turned out to ......well.... hang out, and talk to each other, and consumers.....
It was a good (busy) day. Jb was inundated with people and questions, and the kiddos had a good time too.....And mama was very satisfied with herself for putting all Eco Painting's promotional materials together, on a moments notice. So in short, my family kicks ass. And here are some pictures to prove it.....ENJOY.....

SO. I need to BLOG

So I need to blog.
But first there are a few things I need to get out of the way.
1. Happy Bambino's Earth Day extravaganza was AWESOME. Lots of People, Good Food, and Laughter. It was Great.
2. motherhood is very hard, for so many reasons.....maybe more on that later.
3. Life is wonderful and the inherent beauty in it never ceases to amaze me.

THat said - I have some SHIT to get off my chest. I mean - slow down. It's not nearly as big a deal to you as it is to me, I am almost positive. But maybe it will be after you read this, maybe you'll think about it, maybe you will think I am crazy. Either way, this is what is on my mind.

I am mad? disappointed? discontented? disgruntled? disgusted? sad?
just plain frustrated about a few popular movies this year.
Yes, all that lead up to talk about movies. Well, yes, but it will be short and to the point.
Here my question:

Has anyone stopped to wonder why movies like "there will be blood" and "no conuntry for old men" are so popular? what does this say about the state of humanity?

Wheeeeeeewwwww - Long deep breath

I am not going to go off on some long Rant here. I am not. I am only going to say this:

Those movies are grotesquely, and gratuitously violent, portraying some of the most vile essences of human existance.

I do realize that these are probably old news now, and there are some other grotesquely violent movies sweeping box offices these days. I make a concerted effort to avoid whatever popular culture is doing.....SO, what they are wearing, watching, and doing I am often a little behind on. New movies, new fads, weather or not Jennifer Lopez breast feeds, (and by the way - SHAME ON HER!!!).... usually reaches me a bit late.

This is the kind of Blog that has an immediate and automatic domino effect. We are talking about everything, our very existance, the state of humanity!!!!
Well, at least I am. I mean this shit concerns me on a grand level. I have kids ya'll. And to put it real simply. That shit ain't cool.

I will close with this:

Everything goes into making you who you are! the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the media you consume, all have an effect on your thoughts, your mood, and your perception of yourself, and the world. With that said. Be discerning, look at the bigger picture, don't always go for immediate gratification. You are what you eat ya'll.

PEACE in all your doings.

More about our Featured Artist
Rebecca Peragine...

When it comes to art, Rebecca is a jack of all trades - bouncing from painting to jewelry to metals to body products. Her particular form of collage art happened by accident, thanks to her son, Giovanni. When moving to a new home Giovanni was afraid to sleep alone in his new room. Rebecca pulled out whatever art supplies she had available - everything was still in boxes - and made him a "protector dinosaur". The idea grew and grew.

Event Schedule:

12pm - Big Fun, Little Yoga
Yogi Amala Heeter leads a children's yoga activity based on The Little Yoga Book. Yoga is a great activity to help kids (and adults) slow down, stay healthy and breathe and there's no fancy equipment or setup required.

12:30 - From Applesauce to Zucchini:
Making Your Own Baby Food
Personal Chef, Jenny Ehrlinger, leads a session on preparing all-natural chemical-free baby food.

1:00 - Earth Day Collage Making for Kids
Featured artist, Rebecca Peragine, will facilitate a kid's collage making event. Using recycled materials, families will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on art event making something to take home.

1:30 - Why Fair Trade Coffee Matters
Alicia Wright of Just Coffee will present on the importance of purchasing fair trade coffee and why Fair Trade coffee is "not just a market, it's a movement." Just Coffee's local roasted coffee will be available to sample. Mermaid Cafe, Winnebago Steet's Fair Trade coffeehouse will provide snacks!

2:00 - World Music Activity
Eliza Tyksinski, instructor of the oh-so-popular Music Together classes at Happy Bambino, will be leading a family World Music jam - complete with members of her own family.

2:30 - Sustainable Plate
Eating & Drinking Locally
Gourtmet food & Local brew - delicious!Liliana's, (named for David's daughter Lily - a HB regular) is a New Orleans style gourmet restaurant located in Fitchburg. Liliana's is a member of Slow Foods and Madison Originals. David will be speaking about all the great opportunities to eat and drink locally in the area, including information about local breweries.
3:00 - "Green" Storytime
Laura Anderson, storyteller extraordinairre, will lead a storytime reading some great Earth Day-related books. He was shortish. And oldish. And brownish. And mossy. And he spoke with a voice that was sharpish and bossy. "Mister!" he said with a sawdusty sneeze, "I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees." And of course It wouldn't be complete without Dr. Seuss' The Lorax! We'll have copies available made of recycled paper. Laura will hand out a great "library list" of earth-friendly titles for kids.

3:00 - Panel Discusion
Overcoming Obstacles to Living "Green"
Kermit the Frog contends "It's not easy being green." But this panel begs to differ. The discussion will address simple ways to live more sustainably and how to overcome the hurdles you may face in the process. Panelists: Amanda White, VP of Community Car; Maia Donahue, E4; Meghan Blake-Horst, Absolutely Art & Dane Buy Local; Sarana & John Beik, Roots Wisdom & Eco-Painting.

Care to share? Email us with what obstacles you face in living green, and you could win one of two $20 gift certificates. news@happybambino.com

Musings, but not much to say

So it is Tuesday, I am freshly finished from my doula training, and really excited to get involved with an organization in madison called Small Mircales. They provide volunteer labor support to teenage mothers......
On a funny note, I began writing some thoughts for this blog while still at my doula training, only to find out I was writing on the back of the evaluation form I had to send in. LOL. o well.

At some point I will get around to posting articles, talking about them, yaddah yaddah yaddah. But I haven't the time for that now. Right now my goal is just to write here once a week,

I had a great meeting with the Program director of BriarPatch on Monday. They were really interested in getting JuneBug invloved with their youth arts program. So this is good news. A lot is happening. I can feel it all churning.....
It seems the more that goes on, the more I am learning to be patient.
Life is funny.

Next week I will try to make it good..........hmmm.

Thursday, March 27, 2008

Hiya everyone, so I had this blog up before, and then took it down, and now I am a bit more focused, and so I am putting it up again. Mostly because well, hmmm I think I at some point. I will have something important to say. I have also updated the website quite a bit. My files were ALL messed up for a while, and I couldn't, so that was a bummer.

But JUNEBUG has some really exciting stuff going on, and I am feeling the need to tell the world. So in case you do not already know Saraan and Greg, or Global Awareness Ent. are putting together Art & Activism '09, A day of critical thinking and creative expression. I am not going to quite post all the details here just yet but be sure we have some super people coming through on this, LOTS of local talent from the arts community here, as well as a fabulous special guest from the west coast who has been so generous to agree to be here with us while we do this.

So JuneBug is just getting up and running, and there is lots, lots, lots to be done. So please check back with us..........
